Imagine that a loved one of yours got murdered right in front of you, knowing that you could be the next victim; you quickly called the police to report the murder and request assistance. But by the time police arrived, it was too late.

Unfortunately, this isn’t just an imagination or a movie scene but a real-life tragedy that happens with Keyona Griffin.

Keyona Griffin, a 25-year-old woman, called 911 to inform them about her aunt’s death and told them she could be the next one to die. 

Keyona Griffin was born on March 8, 1994, in the United States and was just 25 years old at the time of the murder.

What Happened To Keyona Griffin?

On March 13, 2019, Keyona dialed 911 to report her aunt’s death and told the operator that she could possibly be the next victim of the murderer. Unfortunately, the operator missed the critical information and didn’t hear Keyona when she said her aunt had already been killed. 

The three Rapids police officers later show up at the incident place, at 553  Sheldon Avenue SE near Buckley Street, approximately after Seven minutes and 41 seconds after Keyona’s conversation with the 911 operator.

The police arrived at the location but didn’t see any disturbing thing or noise at the house that could give them legal cause to break into the house.

They knocked on the door precisely three times and waited at the spot for three minutes to make any contact with anyone at the location.

The police wondered if Keyona had mental issues,checked the surroundings and other sorts of things and left the scene only to be called back two hours and 18 minutes later by Kenyon’s brother Sanford Cummings II to report her sister’s death.

Stanford found his sister dead in the upstairs bedroom. Keyona had been shot at least four times, and one the bullet had struck her in the face.

 Keyona called the police operator and said, “I Need Help.” She repeated this sentence two times.

The operator then asked her, ” Where are you located?” to which Keyona was too muffled to make out; she then told the operator her address and said.

“Can you just hurry up, please I’m fittin to die…  He’s trying to Kill me . He already killed my auntie. Can you hurry up, please? “.

The operator then immediately sent the police on her way. 

Kenyon’s aunt’s name was Cherletta Baber-Bey. She was a loving and caring woman and had her first serious boyfriend named Jay. They two mostly spend their time together in Charlotte’s bedroom.

Key Suspect Of Keyona Murder

Keyona and her aunt’s suspected murderer is Derrell Demon Brown, Keyona’s aunt’s boyfriend.

Cherletta and Derrell first met at the library and soon started dating each other; Derrell spent most of his time with Cherletta and lived with her.

Cherletta Baber-Bey’s boyfriend is only the missing person from the spot, he lived with Cherletta in her bedroom, but the family only knew him as Jay.

Keyona’s family said that they didn’t speak with Jay very often, and they only knew that he didn’t have a job and used Facebook as much as they knew. They didn’t even have Jay’s phone number.

Detective Amanda, while searching, found a Nike Shoebox; as she began searching for evidence, she found some old jail mail letters to Cherletta’s name from a man named Derrell Brown; the detective read the few letters and found out Derrell goes by the name Jay. 

Police also found a box of ammunition; they also found an empty Hi-point gun box in a dresser that contained men’s clothing.

Where Is Derrell Brown Now? Case Update

According to Wood Tv, The Grand Rapids Police Department released a transcript of Keyona Griffin’s desperate 911 call hours before the murders in the days following the killings, but GRPD denied access to the call’s actual audio.

In July 2021, US Marshals “intensified” their search efforts by designating Derrell Demon Brown, 47, as one of the country’s 15 most wanted criminals.

The FBI believes Brown, now 48, fled the state after the murders and is receiving help from family or associates. He grew up in Grand Rapids and graduated from high school there, but he also has relatives in Ohio, Wisconsin, Arizona, and Georgia. A $25,000 reward is currently being offered for information leading to his arrest.
