Zach LaVine Credits his Father, Paul LaVine, For what He Is Today

Paul LaVine, after his parents divorced, partied too much and never trained himself properly, so he had to say goodbye to his football career and worked in construction.

He does his construction jobs and advice and helps his wife in the upbringing of his children.

During this time period, he notices something unusual in young Zach.

According to Paul

“He started walking at about six months, doing things other babies weren’t doing,” Paul says. “I’d take him to the park and put him on the monkey bars, and he’d hold himself for 30 seconds at four, five years old. I played softball (in a pro league), and a guy had a baseball bat on his shirt. Zach would be trying to grab it to swing the bat from the picture. I’m thinking, ‘This kid is different.’ In second grade, he was going to the park to play with sixth-grade kids for money. He’d come home proud of about $10. He was always playing two, three, four years ahead.”

Paul LaVine was always the greatest support system of Zach; he always encouraged him and helped Zach in practicing and didn’t let anyone discourage him or come in between his dreams.

Zach was once asked by a fourth-grade teacher what Zach wanted to be in the future; Zach responded that he wanted to be an NBA star.  After listening to Zach answer, the teacher told him to write down something more realistic.

On the very next day, Paul and his wife decided to go to school and said that “Being an NBA star is my son’s dream, so don’t mess it up”.
