This heinous incident took place at the supermarket on May 14 when a live twitch streamer, jamboboiii, pulled up in the supermarket and shot four people in the parking lot; then he proceeded into the store where he shot multiple people. Most of the victims were black.
He was taken into police custody after streaming the whole thing; in custody, he released a 180-page manifesto detailing his racist views, which he largely linked to the massacre’s inspiration coming from the contentious internet community 4chan.
Furthermore, he also admitted that he planned all the incidents on a private discord chat server.
The shooting happened at Tops Friendly Market on Jefferson Street in a dominant African- American neighbourhood. According to the Associated Press, Gendron is from Conklin, a town located roughly 200 miles southeast of Buffalo.
In a press conference, newly nominated Buffalo police commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said that Gendron wore thick armour. He was using a camera to stream what he was doing while wearing “tactical clothing, a tactical helmet, and tactical gear.”
Although the incident’s video has been removed, there are still screenshots and brief videos of it online. The Amazon-owned firm has shut down the Twitch channel known as “jimboboiii.”
Before shooting innocent people, he made a list of instructions and tested the live stream functions before the attack on Discord.
Discord stated that it was looking into the posts, which were posted on a private server, and was collaborating with law enforcement authorities, but it would not comment on this further.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to the victims and their families, and we will do everything we can to assist law enforcement in the investigation,” the company said.
Police have called this shooting a racially motivated action of white supremacy and hate against black people; he is said to support the “Replacement Theory,” a conspiracy theory that contends non-white people are being imported into the United States and other Western nations to “Replace” white voters in order to forward political goals.
The Justice Department is looking into the Buffalo shooting as a possible hate crime, according to President Biden, who also called it a “racially motivated act of white supremacy.”
Speaking on Sunday at a national memorial for fallen police officers, Biden said:
“A lone gunman, armed with weapons of war and a hate-filled soul, shot and slaughtered 10 innocent people in cold blood at a grocery store on Saturday afternoon.”
First-degree murder is the alleged offence against the suspect. He could receive a life sentence without the possibility of parole if found guilty.
According to officials, the mass shooting is being looked into as a racially motivated hate crime; they are also thinking about filing a terrorism charge. The FBI is also looking into the incident as a hate crime and an act of violent extremism with racial motivation.
